Workshop 1. 'In What Ways' Is Your Child Intelligent?

"The essence of intelligence is skill in extracting meaning from everyday experience"

~ Unknown

Workshop Goals
  • Understanding the concept of Multiple Intelligence

  • Finding out the different kinds of intelligence/smartness your child has

  • Knowing how to further develop and utilize your child's intelligences

Workshop Outline
For ages, 'intelligence' of a child has been measured by the grades, ranks and marks scored in school exams. Many parents reprimand or give up on their children who do not stand up to this yardstick. Hence, these children may remain denied of opportunities and encouragement by their adults. Such children usually may find it difficult to build self-esteem, confidence, and self-awareness. The reality is that there are multiple intelligences that each person possesses. Thus, every child is 'intelligent' in his/her own way. Through this workshop, you will be able to find out what these are for your child, and how to nurture these innate strengths.

Workshop 2. Know Your Parenting Style

“Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you”

~Robert Fulghum

Workshop Goals
  • Learning about kinds of Parenting Styles

  • Finding out your Dominant Parenting Style

  • Understanding how your Parenting Style influences development of your child

  • Taking home a development plan for your style of parenting

Workshop Outline
Parenting is a multifaceted responsibility, different for every parent, and every situation. Each parent exercises a kind of Parenting Style that displays behaviours, which influence child outcomes. This workshop would make you, as parents, be aware of how different Parenting Styles influence, both positively and negatively, a child's behaviour, academic performance and social competence. You would also find out your dominant Parenting Style based on your answers to a set of simple questions. You would eventually become aware of what you could choose to 'do' and 'not do' in becoming a more effective parent.

Workshop 3. Self-Fulfilling Prophecy At Work For Your Child

“Whatever we expect with confidence becomes our own self-fulfilling prophecy.”

~Brian Tracy

Workshop Goals
  • Learning about the concept and model of Self-Fulfilling Prophecy (SFP)

  • Understanding how SFP works to a child's detriment or benefit

  • Knowing how you can use SFP effectively in your child's development

Workshop Outline
Very often and unknowingly, children get branded by their adults - parents and schoolteachers. "My younger daughter is very possessive about her things", or "My son is too timid to fight back the bullies at school". Beliefs or expectations like these, whether correct or not, affect the outcome of a situation or the way a child would actually behave. This relates to the concept, called the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy (SFP), developed by Robert K. Merton to explain how our belief or expectation from a person, affects how the person will actually behave in future. Thus, for example, labeling a child 'brat' would make us treat him/her as such, and inadvertently may foster the undesired unpleasant behavior in the child. Through this workshop, you would explore how SFP works in the two environments in which a child grows up - school and family, and how can this be used consciously and effectively to the benefit of your child.
